Can We Talk
About…
In the early days of personal computing, a film camera was needed to make a cost-effective screenshot. Operating systems would eventually feature keyboard shortcuts to enable digital screen captures. Screenshots have long been used for documentation, education, and evidence, but their popularity as an art form is a more recent phenomenon. By illuminating the view of a singular experience, Sharts1 transcend the pragmatic purposes of traditional screenshots.
Critter’s Can We Talk About… is a sequence of hundreds of Sharts1 of the iOS 5.1.1 Notes app. Many of his Sharts show the just-plussed notepad page in mid-flip. As actual pages which actually flip, the physical book sort of demetaphorizes the skeuomorph. It gets worse. It’s a psychological thriller that mixes obsessive-delusive mental ramblings with collected quotations. And if it starts to make sense, you just need to look at the graphical metadata of dates and times and cetera to roll your eyes all over again. It’s a trip.
1 Shart is a portmanteau of screenshot art. See sharturl.com
